By Luke Sutcliffe, who interned with us last summer.
I interned at Kinnersley Kent Design ahead of my final year at Nottingham Trent University, where I’m studying BA Interior Architecture and Design.
Kinnersley Kent Design is a refreshing place to work because of its friendly team and exciting projects. The studio has a great atmosphere and it’s set in a beautiful, scenic square in the heart of Fitzrovia.
The best part of my internship is that I was treated as a valuable member of the team, and gained knowledge and inspiration working alongside the highly skilled designers. I had the opportunity to develop design ideas from initial concept through to realisation, putting my CAD skills into practice using InDesign, Photoshop, Vectorworks and SketchUp.
It helped me to understand the relationship between the client and designer, and I gained experience in working to deadlines to ensure projects are finished on time and to a high standard. The internship also taught me about the importance of materials within different sectors and environments. I was pleased that I had the chance to meet with suppliers and put my own ideas forward.
Last but not least, the social side was good too. I really enjoyed the Christmas party (1970s/Studio 54 themed!) and going for drinks with the team on a Friday.
I would recommend Kinnersley Kent as a fantastic placement opportunity for any designer wanting to work in London – you’ll go back to university with useful technical and social skills that will definitely help you in your final year.
