"I worked at Kinnersley Kent Design for two months in the summer of 2014 between the second and third year of my Interior Design degree. Like starting any placement I was initially nervous, but the friendliness of my colleagues made me feel welcome from the start. At the beginning of each week we are briefed as a studio which helps introduce the range of projects that are being undertaken and at what stage of design they are at.
During my time at KKD there was a major retail project being undertaken which I helped research and visualise. As well as this, I helped create a pitch for a new hospitality project as well as working drawings for fabrication of an interior project and handling of material samples. I was fortunate enough to undertake a presentation skills course with some of my colleagues during this time as well.
I was mostly working with software that I had previous experience with but other employees where more than happy to teach me new skills that I needed, which I can definitely say has come in useful during my final year of University. Working in a studio such as KKD gives invaluable insight into a contemporary design practice, as well as the running of the business.
The studio has a great atmosphere with interesting people from different ages and backgrounds. I spoke to everyone during my time and managed to work alongside the majority of them on different projects. Importantly I felt like another member of the team rather than just a 'placement student'. Working collaboratively in this manner is great experience in establishing a professional quality to your work and how you communicate.
Social events included lunches, drinks and showroom and exhibition visits which everyone helps suggest/organise. The location on Fitzroy Square is fantastic and I am now a lot more familiar with the area having spent time at KKD."
