The Al Nusl Hotel is located in the centre of some of the most important and intriguing archeological sites in the Kingdom, housing a rare collection of museum quality objects of antiquity from the Al Jouf region. It was built in the best tradition of Islamic architecture drawing on Najdi, Gulf and Andalusian design.
The hotel opened in 1995 to cater for ministers, royalty and tourists. It has recently been awarded five-star status and is the only hotel of note in the area. The Al-Sudairy Foundation briefed us to refurbish the hotel to reflect its new five-star status.
The design concept is based on creating a luxurious guest experience by referencing local culture and combining this with contemporary design. A rich palette of materials was used. From sourcing natural local stone and marbles to rustic weaved floor coverings and seating to reference the region’s heritage in their patterns and textures.
Natural woods in dark and light oaks add warmth and richness to the communal areas, restaurant and bedrooms. It compliments the use of natural stone and soft furnishings. Decorative bronze metalwork is used as elegant strip detailing or as fret-cut screening with a sophisticated traditional Arab pattern.
Our inspiration came from celebrating the heritage of the region and honouring Prince Abdul Rahman Al Sudairy’s vision. We have retained the rustic feel but given it a luxurious modern touch. The Al Nusl Hotel now has a real sense of place – it celebrates the uniqueness of the region, preserves the local heritage – whilst being set in comfortable and luxurious surroundings.
