Donkey Sanctuary

Designing the first store to heighten brand awareness and use it as a benchmark to roll out further locations throughout the country.

The design scheme is flexible with movable counters and free standing fixtures to change the use space to host special events. Retail is integrated into the leisure design and all fixtures serve a multipurpose.

The Donkey Sanctuary is a well-established animal welfare charity, helping around one million donkeys annually around the world.

Part of their ambitious fundraising targets was to establish a small chain of charity stores.

We were commissioned to design the first store in Otley, near Leeds. Our brief was to establish the store to heighten brand awareness and use it as a benchmark to roll out further stores across the country.

The new venture is called ‘For the Love of…”. It incorporates a café, pre-loved donated goods, and retail souvenirs.

The design scheme is flexible with movable counters and free standing fixtures to change the use space to host special events. Retail is integrated into the leisure design and all fixtures serve a multipurpose. Storytelling is evident throughout the store - from the large scale murals, pictograms, a donkey wall of fame, to the cleverly placed, well written copy on the walls. Quirky messaging is part of the VM and integrated in the retail experience.

KKD adopted 3 donkeys through the ‘Adopt a Donkey’ scheme. Little Vijay, Cocoa and Toby are now honorary members of the KKD family.
